ABOUT THE ART

Pele ‘Ai Honua (Pele feasts on the land)

Pele Honua Mea (Pele of the sacred earth)

Pele is the Hawaiian Fire and Volcano Goddess. She is an elemental that is all aspects of fire, magma and lava. Her breath is the steam, her movements in the earthquake as magma moves underground, and in the lava fountains where she dances.

This graphite and colored pencil drawing is overlaid by fire imagery, and is artist Malialuika’s way of honoring her ancestor Pele.
