Kuaʻāina Snapback Hat

Kuaʻāina literally translates as land back. Figuratively, it’s a term used to describe a person who is “country.” Someone who lives off the land, who holds to and still practices traditional ways of doing things. Big Island artist Malialuika honors her Kuaʻāina upbringing on the Big Island with this original design.

This hand-drawn ʻOhe Kapala (bamboo stamping) design created by Malialuika was arranged exactly as it would have been traditionally stamped on Kapa.   

Kapa is a traditional fabric made from the inner bark of a local tree, then soaked and pounded and joined to make a whole fabric. These were then stamped with designs using plant dyes. After this same tradition, this design was created using modern techniques.

This hat is structured with a classic fit, flat brim, and full buckram. The adjustable snap closure makes it a comfortable, one-size-fits-most hat.
