ABOUT THE ART

The ancient land division (ʻahupuaʻa), small community in the uplands, and the robust coastal tourist area situated on the Northwest coast of the Big Island are all named after a wind goddess named Waikōloa (water that travels far).

However, when these areas were developed in the 1980s the kahako (long vowel mark) over the first “o” in the names of these places was dropped. As a result, the meaning of Waikoloa changed to “duck water” (BTW, the only duck water was built into the golf course in the 1980s).

This design commemorates the legend of this ancient wind goddess, Waikōloa, whose name perfectly describes the type of wind that flows through the area from the mountains to the sea, from ancient times till today.
